Training Outlines
1. Inventory Management Fundamentals
Objectives:
- Understand the purpose and importance of inventory management.
- Recognize inventory types and their movement through the supply chain.
- Balance product availability, customer service, and inventory-holding costs.
Topics Covered:
- Purpose and type of inventory; inventory lifecycle and flow through stores, warehouses and the supply chain.
- Balancing availability and customer service against working-capital and inventory-holding costs.
- Reasons for holding stock, including demand uncertainty, supplier lead time, minimum order quantities and seasonal demand.
2. Type of Inventory in Nepal
Objectives:
- Understand inventory categories across different industries in Nepal.
- Classify inventory by type, condition, and operational status.
- Improve stock traceability, inventory accuracy, and accountability.
Topics Covered:
1. Inventory Types Across Industries
- In Nepal, inventory types vary across industries such as FMCG, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, construction, automotive, telecommunications, retail, hydropower, and trading.
- Major inventory categories include raw materials, work-in-progress (WIP), finished goods, packaging materials, maintenance spares (MRO), goods in transit, safety stock, cycle stock, and seasonal or promotional stock.
- For example, FMCG companies manage food, beverages, cosmetics, and personal care products, while pharmaceutical companies handle medicines and expiry-sensitive materials, and cement manufacturers manage limestone, clinker, gypsum, packaging, and spare parts.
2. Inventory Classification by Condition and Operational Status
- For effective warehouse and supply chain management, inventory should also be classified by condition and operational status, including saleable/fresh stock, near-expiry, expired, damaged, customer returns, supplier returns, quarantine/hold, excess, slow-moving, non-moving, and flood-affected stock.
- Companies should maintain regular reports covering stock on hand by SKU, batch and location; inventory ageing; expiry and damage; inbound shortages; stock transfers; cycle-count variances; stock-outs; overstock; and goods in transit.
- Separating inventory type from stock status improves inventory accuracy, traceability, FEFO compliance, cost control, and accountability.
3. Inventory Strategy, Forecasting & Supply Planning
Objectives:
- Understand the relationship between inventory and business strategy.
- Forecast demand and manage supplier lead times.
- Apply appropriate supply-planning systems and techniques.
